Historical Information

previous hit Powhatan  next hit previous hit County  next hit was named for the paramount chief of the previous hit Powhatan  next hit Indians in the tidewater of Virginia in the late sixteenth and early years of the seventeenth century. It was formed from Cumberland previous hit County  next hit in 1777, and part of Chesterfield previous hit County  next hit was added in 1850. The previous hit county  next hit seat is previous hit Powhatan  next hit.

Scope and Content

previous hit Powhatan  next hit previous hit County  next hit (Va.) Military and Pension Records, 1796-1910, consist of militia papers and pension records. Militia papers include militia officer orders, 1818-1826, militia officer qualifications, certifications and commissions, 1796-1833, and miscellaneous records such as militia lists, delinquent militia fines, claims and disbursements, 1799-1864, including a letter from Captain W. I. Dance stationed near Fredericksburg during the Civil War. He expressed his gratitude to the citizens of previous hit Powhatan  next hit previous hit County  next hit for the tobacco and shoes they mailed to his company. Pension records consist of applications for aid, pensions, and artificial limbs, 1877-1884, and Confederate Pension Board Records, 1900-1910.
